I'm glad you like it. It was a difficult subject to write about clearly and understandably. Ron - thanks for stopping by and the votes! What a fun read. I hope more people get to see this, especially kids. Thank you for sharing. Voted up and everything else. You have done a wonderful job NatashaLH.

The sextant was used by Columbus on his way to America. Your pictures are valuable and give the reader a better aproach to a real problem. Awesome activity and just actually got to take a look at this. I have added a link onto my page for it, as well as shared and voted up too!

I agree, hands on is the way to go. It is challenging with today's test-oriented school system, but makes a real impact on the students. Kids eat this stuff up! Writing about it was challenging for me because math doesn't come easily. I hope that, once I figure out things myself, it makes me better at explaining them because I had to struggle! Thanks for stopping by.

I know some students who would really get into this topic! Good to see that you are covering these types of subjects here. It is a great challenge! I felt so powerful when I realized I could use GPS pinpointing and some cardboard with a string to measure basically anything. Thanks for stopping by - glad I was able to explain these concepts in a somewhat understandable way. I never thought I'd get excited about anything having to do with geometry - I made horrific grades in geometry and trig in high school. This is a really cool idea.

I remember being a sophomore in high school and hearing how geometry allows people to measure distances, heights, and things like that, but I couldn't ever figure out how it would be applied. This is a simple way to apply those principles. I never thought I'd learn something about math and geography in my 40s!

Yes, I know the feeling. I tend to zone out when I hear "math," too! There's a reason I have a history degree. I appreciate you sticking with it and the votes. But I forced myself to read it and I actually enjoyed it and found very useful information. Great hub, voted up and more. Thank you for stopping by! I hope your grand kids enjoy this. I personally think measuring tall objects is pretty cool. This is great, and the pirate though certainly can't help stir a child's interest.

I will be working with my grandchildren in a couple of years and trying to help them learn math in all it's forms; this is one I will absolutely have to remember. Anything to make math fun for kids has to be a plus. My kids will love this. I see quadrants in our future. I'm not a huge math fan, but I find it much more interesting when there is a practical application. Glad you liked it! 5 years ago from india, nellore.

And once you have done that about a dozen times, you have a unique, homemade paper flower arrangement! I love how they turned out! They live in Leah’s room now. The poor girl was in need of some accessories in her room, so she was pretty excited when I told her she got to keep them.
